There is always a new shiny tool on the Web that gets all the attention and now it's Twitter. However, Twitter looks like it might last. Twitter is a free service that lets you keep in touch with people through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?
Twitter is designed to work on a mobile phone as well as on a computer. All Twitter messages are limited to 140 characters, so each message can be sent as a single SMS alert. You can't say much in 140 characters. That's part of Twitter's charm.
It is a very powerful communications tool, so you have to think before you twitter, it is very hard to pull something back once its out there. SO avoid using when you might "not be yourself" e.g. angry, over emotional or no concentrating on what you have posted! There was a lot of controversy last month for Twitter when it transpired that Twitters of prominent users had been taken over. Including twitters Barack Obama, Britney Spears, CNN’s Rick Sanchez, Fox News, and Facebook’s had been targeted, with each sending out an obviously fake message ranging from explicit comments to ads for online scams.
Other Twitter uses include Jonathan Ross, Stephen Jobs, Russell Brand, John Cleese to name a few.
They say there are five stages in the twitter relationship:
1) Denial - it sounds stupid, why would anyone want to do it
2) I should create an account and try it
3) I am using it to promote my other content e.g. blog, website
4) I'm using it to have useful dialogue and one to one
5) I am using it to publish useful info and people are responding one to one
Final view? Not the be all and end all of online comms, but useful, free and can support marketing and your day to day communications.
