From data to decisions

Website analytics is one of the most important tools in your toolbox when using your website to do business today. It's vital that you not only understand what your visitors are doing on your website (and how they get there), but also what business decisions you can make using your data. Follow our guide to install Google Analytics, plan out your main objectives, and make business decisions based on your data.
  • Sign up for Google Analytics
  • Place the Google Analytics code on each page of your website to track visitor behaviour
  • Log in to view your statistics
  • Define your Key Performance Indicators for your website (based on your own business requirements) – is it increasing traffic? Is it increasing sales? Is it increasing the time spent on your website?
  • Decide what statistics or which pages you need to examine to inform your KPIs
  • Look for the highs and the lows (most frequently read, most frequently downloaded), and what this means for your business
  • Learn about goals and funnels , and use website analytics code on your online process pages (for example, your online sales process) to understand user behaviour there
  • Make business decisions based on your analytics data...
    • Is a low percentage of visitors converting into a sale? Try incentives for online purchases!
    • Is there a high bounce rate (people coming to a web page and leaving immediately) for your most important pages? Look at your current processes using goals and funnels!
    • What content is being read most? Write more!
    • What content is being read least? Edit or remove!
    • What search terms are being used to get to your website? Make sure you have content around the main ones
    • Where are people coming to your website from? Build up link exchanges with other sites to drive more traffic, and analyse that traffic to see its quality – are people coming from links on other websites buying more than people coming through searching for particular terms?
