Search engine optimisation is vital to ensure your website ranks highly on search engines for key words and phrases that your current and potential website visitors are searching for. Search engine optimisation involves a number of tasks that, combined, help improve your ranking. Here we outline at a very high level what you need to do.
  • Build a list of the key words and phrases for your business – brainstorm; use search engine results; check your competitors; use external tools like the Google Keyword Tool
  • Prioritise your keyword list, ensuring your know your top 10-15 keywords, in order of importance
  • Make sure your key words and phrases occur in your
    • URLs
    • Headers
    • Title tags
    • Meta tags
    • ALT tags for images
    • Content
  • Make sure you’re not doing anything to block/annoy search engines...
    • Too many META tags
    • Too much Flash on your website
    • Using too much JavaScript code
    • Internal links not working
    • Swapping links for the sake of swapping links
  • Get other websites to link to yours
  • Review your website analytics to see improvements!
  • Repeat on an ongoing basis!
